The little country of  Pitigliano is situated on a tufaceous spur that has determined its great fortune, both from artistical and historical point of view. Pitigliano extends itself over 3 torrents,called Lente,Prochio and Meleta,and it's joined to the little village of Sovana trough the so-called “Porta di Sotto”. From the historical point of view Pitigliano is very famous because of the old government of Orsini and Aldobrandeschi, 2 of the most powerful families in Middle Ages, while from the artistical point of view Pitigliano is well known because of its old Etruscan ruines. Palazzo Orsini was the old residence of Orsini family, but now it is the head office of Pitigliano's diocese, and you can also find a very interesting museum in it. The Duomo is Pitigliano's most important church,and you can find a lot of  pictures painted by famous local painters in it.Pitigliano is very famous also because it has been one of  the biggest centre of acceptance for the Jewish community. Jewish people had a good influence on Pitigliano's economy,because they introduced the sale of corn and “pannina”and the lending of money. After the disappereance of the Jewish community from the country, in Pitigliano have been remained the Synagogue and the Cemetery,and because of those monuments Pitigliano has been called “Little Jerusalem”.
